SUMMARY
The IBM Systems Administrator combines development and system administration duties, focusing on RPG programming within an IBM Power (iSeries/AS/400) System, while also assisting in managing the underlying system infrastructure. This role involves both creating and maintaining RPG applications and ensuring the smooth operation and performance of the system itself.
Perform system administration duties in an IBM i Power System & Fiserv Signature environment to ensure information is processed and distributed accurately within established timeframes. Establish, maintain, and enforce policies and procedures to meet the Bank’s security, compliance, productivity, reliability, performance, data-protection, and disaster recovery standards. Assist in managing the Bank’s day-to-day computer operations.
Evaluate and recommend the optimal programming environment, ensuring application security, compatibility and productivity. Additional duties include IBM Power administration and operations, servicing change control requests, technical support to users, participate in IT projects, and be on a rotation schedule for on-call, after-hours system support.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
RPG Development and Maintenance:
- Signature Software Release Retrofit and Installation. Analyzing code changes and merging with existing custom programs.
- Developing, maintaining, and optimizing RPG applications to support business needs.
- Writing clean, efficient, and well-documented code.
- Troubleshooting and resolving issues in existing applications.
- Collaborating with business analysts and end-users to gather requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
- Performing unit testing and debugging.
Assisting IBM System Administrator in the following:
System updates, maintenance, and installations
- Managing and administering the IBM Power x Systems.
- Installing and configuring software and operating system updates.
- Managing user access and security.
- Troubleshooting and resolving system errors.
- Ensuring the system is optimized for performance.
- Performing backups and recovery.
- Assist Computer Operators in daily duties.
System Monitoring and Performance:
- Monitoring system performance and identifying potential issues.
- Troubleshooting runtime and job scheduling errors.
- Reviewing system logs and output queues.
- Participating in a rotating On-Call after hours support.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Working with cross-functional teams to deliver solutions.
- Providing technical guidance and training to team members.
- Communicating with vendors and business users.
Documentation:
- Creating and maintaining Business Requirement Documents.
- Documenting processes, procedures, and application logic.
Other Responsibilities:
- May involve working with other languages like CL and SQL.
- May be involved in legacy application modernization and migrations.
- May participate in disaster recovery planning and testing.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

- BA/BS degree or equivalent experience preferred
- Proficiency in RPG (IV, Free Format, ILE): Essential for developing and maintaining applications.
- Experience with IBM Power System: A deep understanding of the platform is crucial.
- Knowledge of CL programming: Control Language (CL) is often used alongside RPG.
- SQL knowledge: Essential for database interactions and querying.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills: Needed for understanding requirements, designing solutions, and troubleshooting issues.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills: Needed for working with various stakeholders.
- Experience with change management and version control: Tools like Aldon, Turnover or others specific to the IBM Power System.
- Understanding of banking or other financial systems (preferred)
- Familiarity with tools like RDi, TAATOOL, DBU, ROBOT (preferred)
- Time management and project management skills
